It’s been a while since I’ve designed a chair, but I’ve been aching to make one for myself. Seeing Modernatique by Cho hyung suk Design only fueled that desire. Perhaps it’s because it has familiar forms to a chair I designed, but I want to revisit my own design. Hopefully I’ll get enough free time to do this before the year is out.
I found this piece on MoCo Loco.

Being the minimalist that I am, I love when simple forms execute complex functions in an eloquent way. That’s why it made my day when I saw the QuaDror structural systems recently designed by Dror. Watch the video above to see what they’re all about, or read this article on Core77.

I found out recently that Gary Hustwit is making another documentary called Urbanized. Maybe I’m a sucker for product design and graphic design, but I loved Gary’s first two documentaries (Helvetica and Objectified) and I hope his third one is as good as the first two. Seeing that I could get them for around $10 in the iTunes store makes me really tempted to buy them now too.
On another note, I think it’s a brilliant idea to fund his third documentary through Kickstarter. I was skeptical when I first saw this, but the headway he has made in the first week of his campaign makes me confident he’ll reach his goal.

I don’t know where you go to gather data about “The State of the Internet” for 2010, but I’d say this person did a good job of summing things up in a nice infographic. I knew there was a lot of spam mail flying around out there, but nearly 90%? I feel like I should write a thank you card to the developers at Google for keeping my inbox clean. Also, to think that in the time it takes me to pop a bag of popcorn, roughly 9,000 new pictures have made their way onto Flickr.
If one thing has been clearly articulated to me, it’s that there is WAY too much stuff on the internet for me to try to spend my time looking at everything. This drives home that there’s a strong future in content management and websites that offer services to sift through the garbage and bring you the gems that you really want to look at. Hopefully my website is making the cut.

I know it’s a little late for Valentine’s Day, but why does it need to be Feb 14th for romance to be in the air? I caught wind of this funny Op-Art graphic on the New York Times website. I’m a sucker for witty graphics like this that put a smile on my face. Now comes the question, which box do I check?

As far as infographics are concerned this isn’t the most eloquent of things. I still can’t get over how amusing it is. I guess this is just proof that good design isn’t always about “pretty” execution but is more about quality content. Smiles and grins to the people at TED101 who made this image.

  7. Some say computers removed a large degree of craft and finesse from creative industries. Whether you agree or disagree with that position, you have to admit that the people at House Industries have an unbelievable amount of skill in their trade. I consider myself pretty skilled with a pencil or felt-tipped marker, and I found myself jealous of their precision. You should take a look at their work, or at least their demo video. At a bare minimum you’ll be humming Polite Dance Song by The Bird and the Bees for the rest of the day.

  8. Psykopaint

Maybe I’ve been using some of my Photoshop filters wrong, but I’ve never seemed to get much use out of the “artistic” filters. They always seem formulaic and the results never feel much like a piece of art. Apparently the creators of psykopaint.com agree with me.

They’ve taken the formula of filters and given them back the finess of a hand craft. Drop in an image as an underlay and you can be painting like Monet or Degas in no time. Careful though, your ‘brush stroke’ matters to the quality of your master piece. There’s plenty of nontraditional filters too. Admittedly, it’s a lot of fun to illustrate by slicing up the canvas with a bloody knife.

The interface is simple and easy to use (easier with a tablet). I had a lot of fun goofing around on this site. If you have a few minutes to spare, I bet you will too.
